A clear, quick-to-read server resume template

A restaurant manager who’s hiring often reads resumes between shifts. They look for four things: floor experience, type of restaurant, languages spoken and availability. The Boston template puts them front and center, with your contact details and hours right under your name.

Specify the type of restaurant

Serving varies a lot from one restaurant to another. Always give the context of each job:

  • high-volume casual dining or a traditional restaurant;
  • fine dining, with plated service and wine pairings;
  • seasonal venues, beach or ski resort;
  • hotel, with room service and breakfast;
  • bar, with drink preparation.

Quantify your experience

“Served the dining room and patio, up to 60 covers per shift” immediately gives an idea of your pace. Add the size of the restaurant, the number of tables you handled or a specific responsibility: opening, closing, training new servers, managing payments.

Example summaries

  • Experienced: “Server for five years in a busy brasserie and a coastal restaurant, comfortable with fast-paced shifts and wine recommendations.”
  • Seasonal: “Three summer seasons at a beachfront restaurant, used to high-volume service. Available June through September.”
  • Beginner: “Energetic student, available evenings and weekends, looking for a first server job.”

Availability, a deciding factor

Evenings, weekends, holidays, doubles, full season: state them clearly at the top of your resume. A manager looking for weekend help will call the candidate who says they’re available Saturday nights first.

The server resume for the season

Seasonal venues often hire months in advance: in spring for summer, in fall for winter. Prepare your resume early, state your availability dates clearly along with any need for housing, and mention if you’ve worked seasons before: it’s a well-appreciated sign of stamina.

Moving up on the floor

The job offers real prospects: lead server, captain, floor manager. If you’re aiming higher, highlight managing a section, training new servers, end-of-shift cash-outs or communication with the kitchen. These responsibilities show you’re ready for a bigger role.

Finally, take care of presentation: in a hospitality job, a clear, error-free resume already gives an idea of the service you’ll offer guests.

Server with no experience

Restaurants hire many beginners, especially for the season. Highlight your ease with people, your stamina, your punctuality and your availability. A student job, a fast-food crew position or a front desk role are good starting points to showcase. See also our line cook resume template.

Frequently asked questions

What should I put on a server resume?

The type of restaurant, the volume of covers, your floor and payment skills, your languages and your availability. Restaurant managers look at these first.

How do I list several seasons?

Group them or list them with their dates: “Seasonal Server, summers 2021 and 2022”. Seasons show stamina and the ability to keep up a fast pace.

Should I list the languages I speak?

Yes, it's a real asset in tourist areas. State an honest level you can demonstrate on the floor.

Do I need a certification to be a server?

Not always, but a food handler card and an alcohol server certification (such as TIPS or ServSafe Alcohol) are often required or preferred.
