The challenge of a career change resume

When you change careers, your longest experience is often in another field. A standard resume would put it first, and the recruiter might only see your old path. The key is to flip the reading: show the job you’re targeting first, then prove that your background prepares you for it. The Boston template helps: a single column that reads top to bottom, so your new goal and recent training come first.

The three rules of a career change resume

  1. The title announces the new job, possibly with the transition.
  2. The summary tells your story: where you come from, what you did to change, what you bring.
  3. Previous jobs are reread in terms of skills useful for the new role.

An example career change summary

“Store manager for eight years, I moved into accounting with a certificate earned in 2026. Accuracy, cash management and budget tracking are at the heart of my career. I’m looking for a staff accountant role at a firm or small business.”

Highlight your training

Your career change training is proof of your commitment. Put it at the top of the Education section, with its exact title, the institution, the year and, if there was one, the internship completed. Describe that internship as real experience in the new field, with responsibilities and results. For a recruiter, it’s your first experience in their field.

What about your previous career?

Don’t delete it: it shows your work experience, your reliability and your responsibilities. Keep the jobs, but rewrite the descriptions. Remove responsibilities that are too specific to the old job and keep the ones that speak to the new recruiter. Ten years of experience can fit in three well-chosen lines.

Prepare for the career change question

The recruiter will almost always ask why you’re changing careers. Prepare a positive answer, focused on your goal rather than what you’re leaving, with proof of your commitment: the training completed, the internship done, the skills already acquired.

Frequently asked questions

What title should I use on a career change resume?

The new job you're targeting, not the old one. You can mention the transition: “Staff Accountant, transitioning after 8 years in retail”.

Should I keep my previous jobs?

Yes, but describe them in terms of skills useful for the new field. They prove your reliability and your experience of the working world.

Should I use a functional resume?

A hybrid approach often works better: a key skills section at the top, followed by a standard reverse-chronological history.

Should I mention training in progress?

Yes, with the expected completion date. It's often your strongest argument, especially if it includes an internship.
